The legacy of Grey Gardens came to light in 1975 with the documentary film of the same title. The decrepit 28-room mansion stands at 3 West End Avenue in the wealthy Georgica Pond neighborhood of East Hampton, New York. It was the long time home of Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale. The aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.
As was revealed in the fabled documentary, the two women lived in complete squalor and total isolation. The home was to be condemned in the Summer of 72' until Jacqueline Onassis and her sister, Lee Radziwill, provided the necessary funds
to stabilize and repair the dilapidated house.
Still, through out the chaos and clutter of the home were two women who
maintained their legendary sense of eccentric and eclectic style. Among
the dirt and the debris would sit two properly dressed women with jewelry
on every appendage and silk scarves around their nappy hair.
Recently, a descendant of the Bouvier Beals created a jewelry and accessory line to complement the styles of the women who became the object of everyones interest. Vintage pieces of rhinestone covered cuffs and good old fashion brooches. Visit the store online for more pieces and keep an eye out for the 2009 film, Grey Gardens, starring Drew Barrymore as the younger of the Beales.
