I was 13 years old the first time I went to Hollywood and man, it was something else. The glitz of neon signs, the palm trees, the crazy clothing stores, the freaky people. I walked along the Walk of Fame, got my photo taken outside Paramount Studios and met David Hasslehoff.
For that brief moment in time, for whatever it meant, I felt like a star.
It was on this trip that I also caught my first glimpse of the lovely and delicate flower that is Angelyne. Being the naïve early teen that I was, I was absolutely fascinated that this gorgeous blonde lady in pink was on billboards everywhere I went. I asked my father (he lives in LA still), who she was and he mumbled something to the effect that she was an adult entertainer of sorts, but that still didn’t faze me. To me she stood for something, the something that dreams in Hollywood were made of.
Alas, in my older age the cynicism set in, those carefully placed facades put up in front of all our faces to protect us when young came crashing down in front of my eyes and I began to see Hollywood for what it really was. The Hollywood you stroll around isn’t the Hollywood they want to show you on TV and in Movies. Hollywood is bums and drug dealers; Hookers and sad people who come there in hopes of making it. It is, for the most part, run down, scummy and dirty. That being said, I still love it to this day.
How odd is it that now, 15 years later, the once glamorous Angelyne has become a literal parody of herself and the city she lives in – A caricature that represents those whose sun is setting on that fame they so desired but never quite made it. And the only legacy they leave behind is a closet of stretched out pink clothing that was probably made for a 12 year old in the first place.
