My earliest memory of Michael Jackson consists of being utterly and absolutely terrified of the video Thriller. The worst part for me was the breakdown midway where Vincent Price talked over the music. I still get chills when I hear it to this day. Our older brother and I had a long talk yesterday about when the 3 of us siblings were dancing around the living room to the LP on our family’s record player. But for the life of me, all Ican remember if the fear and sheer terror of watching that video. Amazing.
The video for Thriller itself was completely breaking new ground at the time. Today, its commonplace for videos to have story lines and be essentially miniature movies, but back then, this concept was heralding a new era, an era that didn’t even really start getting applied until the late 90s. Thriller came out in 1982. That’s how far ahead of the game Michael Jackson was.
Ieven went as far, as a 26 year old female and getting my hands on the jacket from Thriller last Halloween, as dressing up as Michael Jackson and dancing like a zombie at an all night party.
Whether it was his dancing, his music, or his concerts, MJ had a way of doing things bigger and more over the top than other artists, and looking back through our library of iTunes this morning, whether it was original tracks or remixes, it really is no wonder he was crowned the King of Pop. He was important not only in a Pop music sense, but in a Pop Culture sense. He made an impact musically, visually and simply by his persona.
His contributions the world of entertainment won’t soon be forgotten.
R.I.P Michael Jackson
