Who doesn’t love a little sun kissed
glow on their skin, really? We’re big fans of tanning creams and when applied
properly they give you a healthy all over tans that, when applied properly and
not over used, looks very authentic. It’s amazing really.
But how do they work?
Tanning pills, sunless tanning
or self-tanning lotions and sprays, and cosmetic bronzers all fall into the
category of sunless self tanners. Bronzers results are instant, whereas most
sunless tanning products require 45 minutes to an hour before results can be visibly
seen. It’s important to remember than sunless tanners do NOT protect you
against UV rays, so you are still going to want to cover up with sun screen
before a day out in the sun.
Bronzers
Cosmetic bronzers produce quick results, can be removed easily with water and
come in the form of powders, creams, and lotions. Basically it’s make up that
can be washed off right after.
Sunless
Tanning Lotions and Sprays
The most effective of sunless tanning products are those which contain
dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is a colorless sugar that
interacts with the dead cells located in the upper layer of the epidermis
causing a change in color. Cool right? The change lasts anywhere from 4-7 days
and can be re-applied weekly once the desired shade of tan is reached to
maintain the same color.
Some Quick Tips
Exfoliate
Use an exfoliante, a loofah sponge or a pumice
brush and follow it up with a good quality moisturizer, paying close attention
to dry areas like elbows and knees. Avoid lotions with oil in them as this may
prevent the tanning lotion from penetrating your skin.
Take your Time
Make sure you hit
everywhere with the cream and make sure you apply it evenly to avoid a streaky
look. Not good. Get a friend to help you do your back if need be.
Wait Before You Shower!
You will want to wait a minimum of 4-6 hours before shower swimming or anything
that will produce perspiration. The color will darken over a 24 hour period,
giving you a nice golden glow so you want to let it ‘set’.
Wash Your Hands After
If you don’t use gloves, be sure to wash your
hands after then use a small amount to apply to the backs of your hands.
