There has to be a gene within the complex, unexplained engineering of the human brain that provokes reckless and self-destructive behavior among those blessed with creative talent. It’s all at once disappointing yet unsurprising that the path of Amy Winehouse has taken the twists and turns that it has. It’s the same road taken by so many musicians, artists or any above average creative mind whose gifts can, at times, seem as much of a curse as they are a blessing.
Amy has looked a tad Lord of the Flies lately Running around St Lucia barefoot in small cotton shorts, supposedly off the bad s#it but still boozing heavily. Probably likely - she hasn’t looked this good in a few years.
Like her music, Amy’s look came completely out of nowhere, took everyone by surprise and unlike most people of her fame and celebrity, was not, nor could it have been imitated by many people. It’s the type of thing only she could pull off, in her situation. It’s one thing to borrow a few key characteristics of a look from someone – sure, I’ve seen girls wearing the ballet slippers, and the same (albeit poorly applied) over accentuated black eyeliner. Even caught a few girls rocking the beehive while out at some local rock bars.
Still, it’s the entire package that makes it so special, and we have never, not even once, seen someone try to imitate this as a whole. It is, we feel, because this goes far beyond clothes, or accessories or trends. It’s one of the cases where it’s not only what you wear, but how you wear it. The way you walk, talk and act is as much a part of the outfit as the outfit itself. You can’t buy that in a store.
Now if only she gets back to using her gifts for the way which she can use them best.
