We love hip hop, but hate the fact that it created and still seems to have reinforced the stereotype that every black guy out in the world is all ‘yo yo yo’ with pants around his ass and shiny gold teeth. The odd part is, if you look back historically at the relation of fashion and music you’ll see really big similarities between the early hip hop style of dress and early punk rock movement, which consisted not of baggy pants but mostly tight black levis and combat boots. Of course this is before Malcom Mclaren and Vivianne Westwood basically singled handedly created what is still the traditional punk rock aesthetic today.
Not that not to say we think people that fall for those stereotypes are racist, because usually they aren’t. Stereotypes are more often than not the result of people having limited ideas presented to them and basing their judgments on those limited ideas…like say, oh, we don’t know, MTV maybe? Regardless we love running into a guy like this to just completely blow dumb stereotypes right out of the water. A young black guy who loves hockey, plays video games and tells us his fave band is Alice Cooper.
