I had always thought the wearing of socks and any type of open-toed shoes was reserved for tourists and 6 year olds until a few weeks ago. One Sunday morning I had woken up exhausted, hurting and more than a little dehydrated with a truly odd and insatiable craving for iced tea. After a few minutes of ‘mind over body’ exercises I was determined to make it to the corner store and managed to roll out of bed. Realizing I was still wearing my socks from the night before, but unable to find the oxfords I wore, I scanned my apartment for alternate footwear but all I could find was a pair of black flip flops hiding in the corner. I swallowed my dignity and slid my socked foot into them. I stared at my feet for a second and to my surprise , I kind of liked the way my big toe looked and felt sectioned off from the rest of my toes in my crisp black socks. Apart from the questionable glances from my neighbours, my trip to the corner store was successful. I not only left with 3 bottles of iced tea, but the August issue of Elle Canada as well. I figured I’d need reading material to accompany me in bed as I tended to my hangover all day. And there it was on page 44; Sock Hop, a fashion news piece about the trend of pairing socks with heels! I must say Alexa Chung, Chloe Sevigny and Leigh Lezark make this arguable fashion faux pas look a lot better than I did but I still felt like I was part of an esteemed group of fashionistas. I like socks.I really do.They are the underdog of your wardrobe. I kind of compare socks and shoes to my relationship with my ex-best friend in grade 5 (bear with me here). All was well when we were young and naive. We spent every minute of every day together laughing and playing around the neighbourhood. Then came Junior High. All of a sudden that bit-- er, girl sprouted from a Hush Puppy to a Manolo and decided she was too cool to ever be seen with a plain old sock like me again. It’s nice to see a fashion world where socks and heels can coexist again.
