Pee Wee's Premier
We grew up in a pro Pee Wee Herman household. We watched the show every Saturday morning and had all the movies on VHS. The show Pee Wee’s Playhouse is probably one of the definitive television shows for us and our childhood. The short lived, seemingly random Saturday morning kids show featured people that would go on to be huge Hollywood/Television names such as Laurence Fishburne, Sandra Merkerson, and Phil Hartman, had cameos by people such as Sandra Bernhard and musical performances by people like Grace Jones. Rob Zombie, movie director and front man of heavy metal band White Zombie was even a production assistant on the show. Unlike a lot of children’s programming today, this show had a way of entertaining and even educating children while keeping the attention of the adults at the same time. It was sad, sad day for us 3 kids, as well as our parents, when Pee Wee’s Playhouse was no more.
Even after the ‘incident’, which we didn’t quite understand at the time, our Mother insisted to us that (within reason of course) what people do in their personal lives isn’t really anyone else’s business. Really what did he do? He was caught having ‘superfuntime’ in a theatre and place which is essentially owned and operated under the idea that there will be no ‘superfuntime’ within its premises even though the owners, clients and even the people giving out the city permits know that’s exactly what goes on there. We call bulls#it on that.
The way America judged Pee Wee Herman after his arrest and the demise of his short lived and incredibly hilarious career was unexpected, yet unsurprising. There’s no real moral s in Hollywood is there? Pee Wee Herman was an outcast, but Lala Land was fine with Woody Allen starting a romantic relationship with his underage step daughter and then marrying her. It’s not about what you did, it’s about who you are, and how well liked you are by people who ‘matter’.
That being said is one comeback that we couldn’t be more thrilled is happening. Here’s some shots from the first night.
We had to double check that this was SNL alum Cheri Oteri. Seriously, who knew she could be such a fox? Love the dress.
